Green anise, scientifically known as Pimpinella anisum, is a herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. This plant is characterized by having thin stems, feathery leaves and small white flowers in the shape of umbels. However, it is its sweet and slightly spicy tasting seeds that are widely used for culinary and medicinal purposes. In cooking for liquors and confectionery, but in phytotherapy, as a plant to improve digestion and relieve gas and colic. Anise has been used since the time of the pharaohs of Egypt, where this medicinal plant originates. Its main purpose is to relieve the digestive health of the person who consumes it. Its main property is the essential oil rich in anethole. It also contains flavinoids, vitamin C and is rich in minerals such as calcium, iron, phosphorus or magnesium, among others.
It provides carminative, antispasmodic, sedative and stomachic properties. Among other uses, it is recommended in case of:
  • Flatulence : since anise helps reduce abdominal bloating and reduces gas production, as well as the abdominal pain that it may cause. In these cases, it is recommended to drink a cup of anise infusion before or after lunch or dinner.
  • Dyspepsia : or what is the same, the nerves in the stomach, which anise helps to reduce thanks to its antispasmodic properties. It is recommended to drink a couple of infusions a day.
  • Poor digestion : whether due to copious meals or because our digestive system is slow and hinders its course, anise will help you improve digestive transit, thanks to anethole. As in the previous case, it is also recommended to take two infusions a day.
  • Whet your appetite : if you have a lack of appetite, lack of appetite or anorexia, taking a couple of infusions of anise a day will help you whet your appetite.
  • Stomach pain: like chamomile, anise also helps reduce stomach pain, whether caused by flatulence, intestinal problems, or even those caused by menstruation, in certain women.
